As mentioned before Microsoft sells licenses in volume under three
programs: Open, Select and Enterprise. Characteristically the larger
corporations sign up for the Enterprise Agreement, essentially a
long-standing Microsoft annuity program mostly unaffected by the
alterations initiated under Licensing 6.
There are two types of licensing perpetual and non-perpetual, which
allows you to choose the time-period you want your license to last
for. A perpetual license gives you the right to use the software
continually, while a non-perpetual license lasts for a set time-period.
Perpetual licensing:
A perpetual license gives you the entitlement to use the software
forever however you must pay for all of the cost. Open
Licence, Enterprise Agreement and
Select Agreement are all perpetual. Amalgamating
a perpetual licence with Software Assurance enables you to use the
latest version of a product during the term of your agreement.
Non-perpetual licensing:
A non-perpetual license gives you the right to use software for
the term of the agreement. Once the agreement expires, you can re-new
the agreement or choose to purchase a perpetual license. Enterprise
Subscription Agreement and Open Subscription Licence are non-perpetual
agreements.
